This is a page from the 16th century Book of Hours that belonged to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese who live in Rome in 1546. It was painted by Giulio Clovio who was a famous Renaissance miniature painter. It is an example of how the Renaissance influenced the style of the Book of Hours. The subject is the fall of Adam and Eve from the garden. Look carefully and you will see the serpent coiled in the Tree with a female head.
Please note that the is a very small empty space on the right hand side of the print ( about 1/4 of an inch), the left side has 1.5 inches of blank space. Page is approximately 12 x 8.5 inches and the image is 11x7 inches.
Medieval kings and queens would commission these hand painted prayer books to use everyday.
